Candidate Lieu Reports $1.5 Million Raised; Poll Shows Lieu Winning Attorney General's Race
SACRAMENTO – Showing tremendous fundraising momentum toward the end of 2009, State Attorney General Candidate Ted Lieu shows over $1 million cash on-hand, with $1.5 million raised. In addition, the Lieu for AG campaign released a poll by respected pollster Paul Goodwin showing Lieu as the prohibitive favorite to win the November 2010 election.
We've raised significantly more in the second six months of 2009 than in the first six months – that’s impressive momentum going into 2010,” said campaign communications director Richard Stapler. Every other candidate for Attorney General (excluding Chris Kelly who wrote a personal check) raised less the second six months of 2009 than their first six months.
For comparison, San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris had a 11% decline in contributions; Los Angeles-based attorney Rocky Delgadillo had a 46% decline in contributions; and Assemblyman Alberto Torrico had nearly a 60% decline in contributions. Lieu, on the other hand, had a 14% increase in contributions.
“In addition, polling data shows Lieu coming out as the clear winner in the Attorney General's race," Stapler said. In the November head-to-head, Lieu beats Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley 29 to 28 percent. Rocky Delgadillo loses to Cooley, with other Democratic candidates also losing against the probable Republican opponent. Kamala Harris loses badly to Cooley by 23 to 53 percent after voters are informed about Ms. Harris' record. Lieu is ahead of Cooley because of the positive name ID he has built not just in LA but statewide because of his work on public safety and economic issues.
On the all-important fundraising front, Lieu showed impressive momentum toward the end of 2009. Donors, law enforcement, and Californians from across this state have begun coalescing behind Lieu--who has prosecuted numerous cases, is a military veteran, and has authored landmark legislation to reform the banking industry. Lieu's impressive endorsements, surge in fundraising, and law enforcement support confirm the polling numbers: Lieu is in the best position to become California's next Attorney General.
