Ted Lieu on Social Justice

Ted Lieu firmly believes in protecting the rights of every Californian. He’s worked hard to make sure every person has equal - not separate - rights under the law.

While in the Legislature, Ted consistently voted to end discrimination in public, in the classroom and in the workplace, and he fights to protect women’s right to choose.

As our Attorney General, Ted will uphold the law for all - protecting the legal achievements we’ve made in the name of civil rights.

Equality

Ted Lieu has been on the frontline in the fight for marriage equality. As an Assemblymember, Ted voted to support landmark marriage equality legislation, and he is a proud coauthor of HR 5, which seeks to overturn the ban on same-sex marriage.

Working with Equality California, Ted has also introduced AB 1185, the Equal ID Act, which would make identification change more accessible for transgender persons.

Civil Rights

As Chair of the Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus, Ted Lieu has fought for a level playing field for all Californians. Working with the African American and Latino legislative caucuses and women’s organizations, Ted has increased diversity within California’s Judicial Branch and challenged the Governor to make political appointments that are representative of all Californians.

Additionally, Ted’s leadership has helped secure over $30 million in foundation money for minority and minority-led non-profits. He coauthored a law requiring large foundations to collect information about ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation pertaining to governance and domestic grant making.
